South Yarra Team

Your safety switch is a protective electrical device for yourself, your family and those who surround you when using electrical appliances and devices.

Traditional, period style homes may not have safety switches installed. Without a safety switch you and your family are at risk of electrical shock, fires and alike.

If you are unsure if your home is already fitted with a safety switch the Millerwatts electrical team can find out for you.

Homeowners with Homes that do not have a safety switch installed should contact a licensed A grade electrician as soon as possible to home one installed. It’s important to understand that a safety switch goes beyond the capabilities of a circuit breaker or surge diverter and ensures you and your family have the highest level of protection.

How does my safety switch work?

Like a computer when not in use your safety switch is in a sleep mode detecting any fluctuation in the electrical current within a predetermined tolerance. Once the fluctuation exceeds the pre-established tolerance the power is automatically shut off by the safety switch.

For example:

You are drying your hair with a hairdryer in the bathroom and you accidentally drop the hairdryer into a puddle of water. If you do not have a safety switch you are at risk of a very dangerous electric shock. If you do have a safety switch, the switch detects the fluctuation in current as soon as the hairdryer comes into contact with the water shutting down the power supply and removing the risk of electric shock.

In Victoria state laws were changed in 2009 to state homes built after this date must have an RCD installed. If your home is a period Richmond residence  built pre 2009 then you should consider having the Millerwatts team put together an RCD assessment and have an RCD and circuit breaker installed.

An RCD is an electrical safety device that detects current leakage/ imbalance, when said leakage or imbalance is detected the RCD shut down the current and a circuit Breaker monitors and protect your home from electrical fires through the overheating of circuits and wires.
