Emergency exit lighting is not only essential to meet Australian standards and compliance but it is also essential in allowing people to safely exit your premises in the case of an emergency.

As stated in Australian law if your business meets one of the two below scenarios then you must have emergency lighting installed. 

  1. If your floor area is more than 300m2 then you are required by law to have emergency and exit lighting
  2. If you have a fire-isolated stairway, ramp, or passageway you are required by law to have an emergency and exit lighting

Aside from these scenarios, there are different classes of buildings that may be required to meet different rules and regulations surrounding emergency lighting.

Australia has 10 classes of buildings and each class has its own rules and regulations when it comes to emergency and exit lighting.

In Australia, the law states that it is the duty of care of the building owner to ensure that emergency lighting is installed and maintained in line with the building class and legislation.

Maintenance should be done regularly and as issues arise, this should only ever be done by a licensed electrician.

As required by Australian law all buildings must be regularly inspected to ensure that this emergency lighting is in good working order and that log books are well maintained.

Twice a year your emergency exit lighting must be checked and tested for damaged or defective light bulbs. As well as this an emergency lighting test should be performed on your building and logged for compliance.

The serviceman will log a pass or fail result for the tests, if you receive a failed result, all repairs must also be logged for compliance.

If you receive a pass result for the tests you will receive a compliance certificate.

Every 12 months building owners are required by law to have all emergency exit lighting inspected, maintained and cleaned.
